Italy, through its food and wine

When to Visit Piedmont for White Truffles

For a trip centered on Alba white truffles, October and November are a useful starting point. Build your plans around the current season and the experience you actually want: a fair, a meal, or time outdoors with a truffle hunter.

Start with the experience, then choose the dates

A truffle-focused trip can mean several different things. You might want to taste fresh white truffle at a restaurant, explore Alba’s truffle fair, or learn how a hunter works with a trained dog. Decide which matters most before committing to flights and accommodations.

The International Alba White Truffle Fair is a useful seasonal reference. Its 2026 program runs from October 10 through December 6, with events on selected dates. For future trips, check the official regional tourism listing for the year you plan to visit. The event calendar is not a guarantee of a particular restaurant’s supply or a successful hunt.

October, November, or early December?

  • October: a starting point if you want a fall visit that may combine the fair with a broader food and wine trip. Check which events fall on your dates.
  • November: another option within the fair’s autumn program. Look at the experiences available on your actual travel days rather than choosing a month on reputation alone.
  • Early December: worth checking when the fair extends into December. Confirm the program and the availability of any specific tasting or restaurant experience before making plans around it.

These are planning windows, not a promise that one month will produce better truffles than another. Keep your itinerary enjoyable even if a particular experience changes.

Ask what a “truffle hunt” includes

A visitor experience can be an educational demonstration rather than an unrestricted search for wild truffles. The regional tourism board, for example, lists a simulated truffle hunt. That can still be an engaging introduction, provided you know what you are booking.

Ask whether the experience is simulated or a seasonal search, which truffle species it concerns, whether it is conducted in English, and whether a tasting is included. Also ask about walking conditions, footwear, duration, and what happens if the weather prevents the outing.

Give the rest of Piedmont room in your plans

Leave time for the places and meals around your truffle experience. A relaxed lunch and a focused winery visit may suit you better than a day packed with appointments. If you are interested in Barolo, tell your trip planner how much of the journey you want to devote to wine and how comfortable you are with travel between stops.

Our Piedmont food and wine travel page offers inspiration for the region. We are developing our itineraries and welcome your preferences; individual experiences and inclusions will be confirmed in a proposal.

Before you request a proposal

Share your possible dates, party size, interest in white truffles, and whether you prefer a fair, a restaurant experience, or time with a hunter. Mention any mobility or dietary needs and whether this is your first trip to Italy. Those details are more useful than asking for a generic “best truffle tour.”
